Reduce, reuse, recycle, that’s the mantra for today. We hear a lot about how to reuse and recycle but what is more important is to reduce in the first place. This is the most important of the three R’s.
There are tips galore on how to recycle and reuse products and a lot of these things are fun and save you money. Let’s not forget reduce however, as this is how we really tackle consumption and pollution at the grass roots. When we reduce, we stop production and the pollution it causes at the first step. If we don’t go out and buy something, another one does not have to be created. Our item does not have to be shipped to our home and we don’t need to dispose of it at the end of its life.
There are a few ways to cut down and reduce and the first important action is to think. Consider if you really need something before you buy it. So many times we are tricked into buying stuff we don’t need, so see through the messages out there that encourage you to buy and think critically. Only bring into your home items that you need or know you will use a lot or get a lot of enjoyment from. Not only does this help the planet, you end up with far less clutter. You can even give yourself a fixed time to think about a purchase. Wait a week or two, still need it? Maybe not.
When you buy, make it re-useable as much as possible and avoid disposables. They make life easier in the short term, but when you are grappling with the wind thanks to stormy climate change weather, you will quickly realise that it’s not worth it in the long run.
Try to go zero waste in your home. This can take some time and a bit of getting used to but the closer you get to it the less harm you do the environment.
All you need to reduce is to think on things a little and find some other ways to get what you need. It’s not only good, it’s fun.
